January 2007 - Hosted by the Plymouth Chamber of Commerce and Industry in partnership with Plymouth City Council, Government Office South West and the University of Plymouth, the Urban Plymouth Infrastructure Conference held on Wednesday 24th January 2007 was the fourth in a series looking at the urban rebirth of Plymouth under the Mackay Masterplan.
The conference explored the overall vision and considered the opportunities and difficulties of providing new city-wide transport links, energy supplies and other strategic concerns.
John Preece, Chairman of the Taxifast group of companies and an eminent speaker on both private and public transport issues, delivered a lively presentation on his view of the steps necessary and considerations required in the implementation of a sustainable and efficient road traffic system. John explained how he believed that the transport issue is the largest single problem facing Plymouth’s sustainable prosperity and from maximising upon its opportunities. John outlined how we need to review our road infrastructure in its entirety with a view to simplification and not over-complication whilst making use of technology. Car parks should be affordable, suitable and available and that these should be funded via private partnerships.
“We must recognise the damages of carbon emissions from all of this traffic on our congested roads. The use of LPG can cut carbon emissions yet there is no facility in or even near the city centre to deliver this type of fuel”, said John Preece, “Taxifast is a forward facing taxi business and we travel twice around the world everyday in mileage. We want to be part of cutting carbon both by efficiency and suitable fuel and believe that the Council and industry in general should work together to lobby the organisations that can make this happen”.
John has just completed his 40th year in business. An entrepreneur by nature, he has acquired a vast experience of the public transport sector. Internationally known within the taxi industry, John provides consultation services to government level and current projects include providing consultation to the “GoSkills” board on introducing training standards within the taxi industry.
